Basic Battery Energy Saving Tips
Ubuntu comes with a power management module that gives us basic control to save our battery life, to open it just go to System > Preferences > Power Management.
We can extend our battery life by selecting these options from the power management screen:
1. Putting our computer to sleep when it is inactive.
2. Setting our computer to hibernate mode when battery power is low.
3. Slowing down the hard disk spin.
4. Putting display to sleep when it is inactive.
5. Reducing the back light brightness.
6. Dimming display when the computer is idle.
Our Wifi/Wireless Radio consumes power when it receives and sends data over the network and we should turn it off when were not using it. We can turn off our wifi if our network card supports the enable and disable power control mechanism by using the iwconfig command that we can execute in Ubuntu console:
Linux provides a simple tuning mechanism to save energy consumption in our processor by distributing the processing load among the available processors. If youre laptop comes with multi-processor, we can use take advantage of Linuxs processor balancing feature to save energy consumption by executing this command through the console:
Setting Relatime
We can disable the atime to reduce disk write at the cost of breaking software that relies on atime. An alternative is to enable the relatime option where Linux will update files access times only if they are earlier than the modification time. This change allows utilities to see if the current version of a file has been read, but still cuts down significantly on atime updates. I used to have the idea to buy a second hand laptop because of poor situation. And someone said that it was worthy. Others didn’t agree with it. And I hesitated for a long time. Finally, I quit the idea to get a second hand. But some friend did buy vey worth one. I am not a veteran. So I pick a new one to have my heart in the stomach.

Whatever, I want to share the experience with all the readers on second hand computers. Nobody knows where the laptop came from. Namely, we have to do some arrangement and clearance before we take it as our own notebook. There may be useless software in side or other defects.

The first thing is to organize the application software. It’s not certainty for the used laptop. When you get the computer, the first thing is to check the hard disc and clean it. There is another way is to download some update software to have notebook a refreshment. If this the first time your Dell laptop threw a problem, power cycle it and any other attached piece of hardware. Sometimes a simple reboot works like a charm as it refreshes the configurations and clears a common glitch. Make sure that the power cable is firmly connected to your computer and the power jack.

If this hasn’t fixed the problem in your Dell laptop, determine what the nature of the problem is. Is it the battery which is not charging or something else? If the battery is not charging, check the AC power adapter. Check if the LED light on the adapter is on or off.

If it is off, check the physical connection of the adapter to the power jack. It might have gotten loose. Plug the adapter firmly into the power jack and check back if see the light turns back on or not. If the light is still not lit, plug the adapter into another power jack and check. If the LED light is lit, there is a problem with that power jack.

If there is problem with your audio playing, check if the speakers are working fine or not. If there is a headphone connected to your laptop, detach it. Check back the sound by playing a song. If it plays fine, then there is a problem with the headset. Plug the headphone in another laptop or computer and check if it works fine or not. If it works fine, then you might need to update drivers of your sound card. If the headset does work in another laptop too, it needs to be taken to a computer repair shop.

To update drivers of your sound card, go in the Device Manager. To go in Device Manager, navigate to the Start menu, Control Panel, and then System. When in the Device Manager window, click on the + sign next to Sound, video, and game controllers. You will see your sound card listed there. Right click on the sound card and select Update drivers. If you have previously not downloaded the driver file, do not click the Browse button. You should rather search them online. When drivers have been updated, exit all the windows and reboot your laptop. Afterwards, reconnect your headphone and check back, it should work fine now. You can do the same for your video card.

If your Dell laptop started creating problem after the installation of a new hardware or software, undo the changes. Yes, either uninstall the particular software or hardware and check back or restore your Dell laptop to an earlier time. It should fix the problem and get your laptop back to functioning. Further, test your hard drive if it is working fine or not.

To do so, boot your Dell laptop. Right after you see the on-screen message to press the F2\F12 key, press the F12 key to enter the BIOS menu of your Dell laptop. Select the hard drive diagnostic option and test if the hard drive is working fine or not. You will have to wait for some time to let the test finish. When done, if you see a successful message, the hard drive is working fine. If you see a fail error message, hard drive is malfunctioning and needs a replacement.

It’s said that the heavier, the better for the laptop battery. is this saying right or wrong? to be frank, I have the same idea that the heavier AC adapter has better performance.
